Easy A Was Never Really About High School

I don't know if it's just me, but some movies completely change when you watch them as an adult. Easy A was one of those movies. As a teenager, I thought it was just a funny high school comedy. Watching it now, I think it's actually about something much bigger.

The entire movie starts because people make assumptions. One small rumour grows into a story that takes on a life of its own, and before long, everyone thinks they know Olive without ever asking her what really happened. It's funny on screen, but it's also surprisingly realistic.

The older I've gotten, the more I've realized that this doesn't stop after graduation. High school gossip simply changes locations. Instead of hallways, it's workplaces, family gatherings, neighbourhood Facebook groups, or social media comments.

People are naturally curious, but curiosity can quickly turn into judgment. Sometimes we hear one version of a story and decide we've already figured someone out. The truth is, we're usually missing most of the context.

One of my favourite things about Easy A is that it reminds us how easy it is to become the main character in someone else's story without even realizing it. People fill in the blanks with whatever makes the most sense to them, whether it's true or not.

I've reached a point where I no longer feel the need to correct every misunderstanding. The people who genuinely care will ask questions before making assumptions. Those are the people worth keeping around.
