The Three Words That Instantly Raise My Heart Rate
"Can we talk?"
There might not be three more intimidating words in the English language. They're short, simple, and somehow capable of making your brain immediately assume the worst. It doesn't matter where they come from either. A friend, your boss, a family member... they all have the same effect.
Within seconds, my mind starts replaying every conversation I've had recently. Did I forget something important? Did I accidentally offend someone? Is this about work? Somehow my imagination always creates a much bigger problem than reality ever does.
The funniest part is that most of the time, the conversation ends up being completely harmless. Maybe they want advice, need a favour, or just remembered something they forgot to tell me. All that unnecessary worrying was for absolutely nothing.
I've become convinced that we could eliminate half the world's anxiety by simply adding one more sentence. "Can we talk? Nothing bad!" or "Can we talk? I need your opinion." Those few extra words would probably save people hours of overthinking.
Until then, I'll continue convincing myself that every "Can we talk?" message is the beginning of a dramatic movie scene. It's never as serious as my brain thinks it is, but apparently that lesson takes a while to stick.
